Making a Difference in Uganda: Stories of Impact from Our Volunteers

At Making a Difference in Uganda (MDU), volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Every year, people from all over the world join us to share their skills, time, and passion. Their contributions not only create a lasting impact on the communities we serve but also leave them with unforgettable experiences.

Here are some inspiring stories from our volunteers who have made a real difference in Uganda.

Jesse, a Medical Student from Netherlands

“I volunteered with MDU during my final year of medical school, and it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. I worked with the medical outreach team, providing treatment to patients in rural areas who had little or no access to healthcare.

One moment I’ll never forget was when a mother carried her 3-year-old son to the camp, seeking help for his breathing difficulties. We diagnosed him with pneumonia and provided immediate treatment. The relief on the mother’s face was indescribable.

I learned so much from the local medical team and gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience of Ugandan communities. Volunteering with MDU reminded me why I chose to pursue medicine in the first place.”

Theres, a Women’s Empowerment Trainer from Switzerland

“As a small business owner, I was excited to volunteer with MDU’s women empowerment program. I worked with a group of women to teach them how to budget, market their crafts, and build confidence in their entrepreneurial abilities.

One of the women, Janet, stood out. She had incredible tailoring skills but struggled to price her products. After our sessions, she began to charge fairly for her work and even expanded her business. Hearing her say, ‘You’ve changed my life,’ brought tears to my eyes.

I came to Uganda thinking I would teach, but I left feeling I had learned so much more—from their determination, creativity, and strong sense of community.”

Diana, a Teacher from the Spain

“I spent three months volunteering with MDU’s education program, helping children in a rural school improve their reading and writing skills. The dedication of the local teachers and the eagerness of the children to learn was truly inspiring.

One student, a 10-year-old girl named Amina, struggled with reading when I arrived. By the time I left, she was confidently reading short stories aloud in class. Seeing her progress was one of the most rewarding moments of my life.

MDU gave me the opportunity to not only teach but also connect with an incredible community. Uganda will always have a special place in my heart.”

Why Their Stories Matter

These stories show how volunteering with MDU is more than just giving your time—it’s about creating connections, sharing knowledge, and making a real difference in people’s lives. Every volunteer brings something unique, and in return, they gain a new perspective on the world.
